Let's first review the two categories of storage applications that we wish to cover in this article:Īutomatic Backup Applications: With this type of software app, you choose the files/folders you want to backup, the backup schedule, and other relevant parameters. Instead, we wish to provide some recommendations and opinions for users that are not sure about the optimal backup vs. This article is not intended as an explanation as to what all of these applications can do. It should be noted that there are hundreds of different backup & file transfer oriented storage applications that support the S3 API and can be used with Wasabi (this Wasabi knowledge base section provides a list). This article provides some guidance on this topic. In case you're curious, here's my backup policy, before and after ACDpocalypse:Ģ TB External HDD for Time Machine in use since Day 3.īackup every 8 hours to ACD via Arq (I know 3-2-1, but its barely been a month, and I'm saving up for another 8 TB drive)īackup every hour to ACD via Arq, capped to 1000 GB quota.Wasabi is often asked by individual and small business users that are new to S3-style cloud storage for recommendations on the optimal storage application approach for backup and file transfer use cases. Glacier is basically dead in the water for me. I mean while Backblaze is a much more transparent company, Wasabi clearly wins, as it saves me nearly $10 per TB annually. I also started using Backblaze, and in ~20 days its uploaded 1.3/5TB on a 50 Mbps direct fiber line. I literally just started my free trial of Wasabi to see if it can replace ACD on my Windows. we're not their target, AWS S3 and maybe Glacier users are, with their pricing a hair below Glacier's, no API charges, and egress bandwidth undercutting AWS but not B2. before their recent and easy fundraising round, they only had runway to the end of this year. If we assume their technical durability is about the same as Backblaze's (while Backblaze has two data centers now, your data is going to be on one or the other), I don't see any reason people like us doing sane backups that won't use excessive APIs would use them over B2, their "business durability" is unknown but on general principles has to for now be viewed as much less than Backblaze. And I think I saw something about their maybe later charging more for multi-region class of storage. We don't know if they duplicate your data between the two sites, all they say is "we use best practices", but given their pricing, I'd doubt it. In the Hacker News topic one of their people said they have two, one in their home state of Massachusetts, one in Northern Virginia.
